Bamboo (which is actually a type of grass) is a good substitute for hardwoods because it grows fast and can be harvested with little impact on the environment. Bamboo is so strong it is used for scaffolding in the Orient and has anti-oxidant properties which prevents bacterial growth and prolongs its useful life.
